About

Introduction

Hello and welcome to ‘Blunderbuss’. My name is Matthew Canning.  I am Irish and an enthusiastic Metallic Silhouette Shooter in both Small Bore and Big Bore Rifle.

I have been interested in hunting, shooting and firearms for many years.  In 1992 I bought my first shotgun, an O/U Emilio Rizzini 12 Gauge.  A nice little Italian masterpiece with game engravings of duck and pheasant on both side plates, it fits me perfect and is soft to shoot.

I created the ‘Blunderbuss’ Blog to bring together and feature information on my sport of Metallic Silhouette Shooting, Firearms Maintenance and the Science and Skill of Cartridge Reloading.

I also ‘aim‘ to include my thoughts, tips, videos and links that I find of interest in the world of shooting sports!

Why Silhouette Shooting!

My introduction to Metallic Silhouette Shooting came in the Autumn of 2000 during my search for a shooting club.  Every Sunday morning I could hear Shotgun’s in the distance so I set out in the car to follow the sweet music of the 12 gauge.   Within 20 minutes drive I pulled up at a local petrol station and asked if they knew a shooting club in the area and as luck would have it, the shop attendant told me there was a shooting club just down the road.  It was Fassaroe Sporting Club, Co. Wicklow.  Fassaroe Sporting Club has since relocated to approx 1.5 miles outside of Roundwood, Co. Wicklow and renamed to East Coast Shooting Club.

After a few informal introductions, one of Fassaroe’s senior members offered me his rifle to take a few shots.  I knocked over 3 from 5 Pigs.  There and then I was hooked.  In the Spring of 2001 I applied for my firearms license and bought my first .22 rifle a ‘CZ452 Style’ that I topped of with a 6-24x Tasco Mil Dot Scope.  Due to relocating for commuting and work purposes, I joined BRC Shooting Club in Bohernabreena, Dublin South, where I am currently an active member and have been since the Autumn of 2001.

To become more involved in the BRC Shooting Club I offered my services to the committee and served as club Secretary from (2002 – 2004).

With continuous range development and upkeep of the clubhouse and grounds I do my best to attend work details as I am proud to say that I am a member of BRC Shooting Club.

Other Interests

Apart from shooting I have a number of hobbies which include road running, weight training, blogging, writing articles for publication in the ‘Ulster Herald newspaper and Irish Shooters Digest magazine’, reading ‘novels, forums and factual information‘.  I also enjoy travel and working with technology.  Just as important as all the above I enjoy meeting with friends for a cold beer and a bit of craic.

A Proud Moment

In 2005 as the final whistle had blown on the All Ireland Football Final in Croke Park, my skin was alive, every nerve tingling as Tyrone lifted the Sam Maguire Cup. Now 30 minutes later, as I exited the Hogan Stand, a Tyrone woman standing next to me at the top of the steps, turned and said, “You’re the lad in the paper than won the gold medal for shooting” To my amazement and with a huge smile I said ‘yea that was me’ and her response was ‘congratulations, well done’.

I couldn’t believe it.  Tyrone had just lifted Sam Maguire for the 2nd time in their history and in a crowd of 80,000, I was recognised from a photo and a short story that appeared in the Ulster Herald newspaper 1 week prior to the All Ireland Final.

For me this day had two proud moments, Tyrone winning Sam and the recognition of my shooting success.
