Anneal Before Me And Pray…

Here it is folks, a little Christmas present to myself.  I have read alot about annealing, watched a number of YouTube Videos and posted articles on this subject. Now with the professional craftmanship, workshop and ingenuity of my brother I have finally got an annealing workstation of my own.  I believe it is unique in everyway and if not then brilliant minds do think alike.

In the images below you can see that the annealing workstation’s housing is made solely from MDF (wood) all except the screws and a single hinge.  It does weigh a few pounds but that adds to its stabilisation when in operation.

Cold Weather, Hot Shot…

After 4 weeks of snow, ice and little chance of getting to the range, I finally got to take a few shots today.  With a light snow fall during the night, the morning conditions were very favourable. Temp display was reading -2 as I pulled into club carpark but the air was still and the day bright.

After jarring open the frozen steel target boxes and decorating the silhouette bays with chickens, pigs, rams and not forgetting those festive turkeys, I wrapped my hands around a hot cuppa to get the warmth back into me before my first shot.

Forster Ultra Micrometer Bullet Seater

Forster Gunsmithing and Reloading tools are amongst the best on the market.  Although I do use products from other suppliers such as Lyman, Lee, RCBS and Wilson I admire the Forster products also.

I have read on a number of  forums how good Forster’s Competition Bullet Seating, Neck and Full Length Sizing Dies are so in 2011 I hope to put a set of competition dies on order.

Annealing Made Easy

In my previous post on annealing I spoke of the cottage industry of annealing machines that shooting enthusiasts have produced.  The majority of the small productions are based on the idea of a timed  rotating disc with holes drilled in them.  These holes are not for ventilation or to make the disc lighter, but are used to hold the cartridge case in place as it rotates towards the propane gas flame.  The case will then be annealed and once it rotates beyond the flame it drops through the hole into a pan and left to cool.

Annealing Rifle Brass

Is It ‘Worth’ The Effort

There has been a lot said on the pro’s and con’s of annealing rifle brass.  A small cottage industry that continues to grow has also been established due to the uptake in shooters looking to anneal their brass with uniformity in mind.  Have a look on YouTube or Google ‘annealing rifle brass’.  There are some great inventions available online and some great ideas to try in your workshop that will not cost the earth financially.
